A New Year Message from Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto
Presidency of
the Republic
• In the sixth and final year of this
administration, the government will continue its work so that more Mexicans can achieve their dreams and goals.
“Dear Mexican families:
“I would like
to wish you a happy and successful 2018. May joy and harmony be present in your homes.
“The beginning
of a new year invites us to assess what we have achieved and to reflect on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
2017 was a year of great challenges for Mexico.
“At various times, we faced a complex international
environment. The September hurricanes and earthquakes also tested us as a country.
“But with everyone’s
solidarity, effort and unity, Mexico pulled through.
“Today we are stronger and better prepared. That
is why I am convinced that 2018 will be a great year for Mexico.
“In the coming months we will continue
promoting the transformation we began together five years ago.
- “In 2018, we will redouble our efforts to improve
security conditions throughout the country; this is a task for municipal, state and federal governments.
- “In
these five years, over two million people emerged from extreme poverty. We will continue working to reduce the social
deprivation many Mexican families still suffer.
- “In 2018, support for those affected by earthquakes
will continue to be a priority, so that they can recover their homes and resume their everyday activities.
- “In
addition, we will continue to rebuild schools so that children can attend classes in safe classrooms.
- “In
the next school year, classes will begin to use the New Education Model. This will allow students to have the
best teaching methods.
- “Before the end of this year, for the first time in our history, more than four million
formal jobs will have been generated in a single six-year term. This exceeds the combined number of jobs created during
the two previous governments.
- “The income of families will continue to improve with more and better jobs, and with the highest
recovery of the minimum wage in decades.
- “Four years ago I promised there would be no new taxes; in 2018 this commitment
still holds.
- “There will also be no increases in low consumption electricity rates; in fact, the price
of electricity has not increased for 99% of households for three years now.
- “In 2018 the first
stage of the New Port of Veracruz, and the Interurban Train between Toluca and Mexico City, will begin.
- “By
the end of the year, two of the runways at the new Mexico International Airport, the structure of the terminal building, and
the control tower will be ready.
- “And 2018 will be a great year, because Mexicans will participate in the largest democratic
election in our history.
“The women and men of Mexico are the true protagonists of the transformation
we have undertaken.
“In this sixth and final year of the administration, the government will continue
working so that more Mexicans can achieve their dreams and goals.
“With the unity and strength we showed
in 2017, and the pride of being Mexican, let's make 2018 a great year for Mexico.
“Thank you.”
