"Mexico Assumes its Responsibilities as a Global Actor"

Mexico assumes its responsibilities as a global actor, and confirms its conviction
that our country is strengthened through dialogue and joint efforts with other nations, declared Coordinator of Social Communication
of the President’s Office and Government Spokesperson Eduardo Sánchez Hernández, who announced the activities
that President Enrique Peña Nieto will undertake within the framework of the 70th General Assembly of the United Nations
(UN) during a stay of less than 48 hours in New York.
Mexico,
explained Eduardo Sánchez, forms part of global solutions. It is committed to solving present issues and it is sowing
prosperity for the future. He recalled that Mexico is a founding member of the UN, and reaffirms its commitment to the fundamental
principles of this organization.
At a press conference
held jointly with Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs Miguel Ruiz
Cabañas Izquierdo, and Ana Paula Barbosa Fernández, General Coordinator of Advisors of the Mexican Foreign Secretary,
he declared that the president will be absent from the country from the 26th to the 28th of this month to participate in various
forums.
“First, he will co-chair the Summit of Gender Equality
and Women’s Empowerment.”
As he outlined the mission
to be led by President Peña Nieto, he said that the president will also participate in a meeting of Heads of State
and Government on Climate Change, and the Summit for the Adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“When he addresses the 70th UN General Assembly, President Peña Nieto
will highlight the priorities of Mexico’s multilateral agenda,” he declared.
He will also attend bilateral
meetings with his counterparts from member countries of the Pacific Alliance, and other nations, as well as His Excellency
Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary General.
Eduardo Sánchez
said that the participation of 100 heads of state and government is expected at the 70th Session of the UN General Assembly.
The Mexican delegation, led by President Peña Nieto, will confirm Mexico’s role as a promoter of friendship,
dialogue and solidarity among nations, and will make significant contributions in the fields of sustainable development, gender
equity, climate change and peacekeeping operations.
During
the press conference, it was announced that Mexico will attempt to influence the UN agenda by promoting the issues that our
country considers crucial, such as:
• The recognition
of migrants’ contribution to development;
• Social and economic
inclusion as the basis for combating inequality;
• Recognition of access to water as a human right;
• The adoption of gender equality from the perspective of human rights;
• Promoting the rule of law as an enabler of development.
The president will also advocate the comprehensive reform of the Security Council to strengthen the United Nations’
commitment to maintaining international peace and security, and he will address the world drug problem in order to combine
countries’ efforts to combat it.
