Mexico's
Defense of Migrants in Arizona 'Just Talk'
'Punto y Aparte...', El Financiero
Rhetorical Advocacy
One of the clearest effects brought about by Arizona's
anti-immigrant law SB 1070 is a spread of the climate of xenophobia and discrimination in the United States in this election
year, which is one of the real reasons why President Barack Obama decided to postpone — once again — legal reform
on the subject, despite his campaign promises in 2008. As a result, in this adverse
setting, the Mexican government has fewer diplomatic weapons at its disposal, a disadvantage that is added to the lack of
a solid plan and arguments for the protection of undocumented fellow citizens and, in general, the community of Mexican origin
in the neighboring country. Whatever the case, without the foreign ministry having
multilateral authorities to turn to in order to demand [respect for] human rights in Arizona, the defense of migrants will
continue to be just talk.
