Letter
to MexiData.info
Mexican
President Active in Energy Reform Efforts
Your piece on the forthcoming energy reform debate
in the Chamber of [Deputies] was excellent [Mexican Efforts for Energy Reform and the Looming Battle, by Barnard R. Thompson, MexiData.info, January 28, 2008]. I have taught a course entitled Mexican Government, to the future leaders
of Mexico, at The American School Foundation of Monterrey (ASFM) for the past ten years and have been discussing the
infusion of private investment into PEMEX with each generation.
The only point that you might have wanted to include
may have been President Calderon's active role, in contrast to Fox's tepid involvement during the previous [sexennial],
in the bartering/negotiating necessary to get the PRI on board. Last week the PRI asked for the resignation of the Secretary
of Agriculture Alberto Cardenas, in exchange for their cooperation in the energy reform package. Last year, Calderon
had to throw a sweet morsel to the PRD delegation, in the form of the removal of the executive board of the IFE, in order
to get them to vote for his tax reform bill.
I hope that you'll keep a close watch on these events during this crucial
period in the Chamber and share your impressive knowledge and valued insights with your readers.
