President
Addresses Mexican Ambassadors and Consuls
Presidency
of the Republic
(Excerpts from speech)
“This Annual Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls
is a crucial forum that will enable us to reflect on Mexico’s current status and on the opportunities and challenges
facing our country within the world context. As you know, public policy in general and the foreign policy promoted by my government
is based on the search for Sustainable Human Development.
“I would urge you all, our representatives abroad,
to continue your efforts to publicize the comparative advantages of our country, such as its geographic position, political
and economic stability, institutional life, financial stability and demographic bonus.
“Mexico is a crucial actor in helping to meet
the main challenges of mankind.
“Our country must also assume its role in the
construction of greater global and regional understanding, particularly in Latin America.
“As for North America, the region's competitiveness
in relation to other economic blocs will only be increased through the growing integration of the economies of Mexico, the
United States and Canada.
“Realizing that the conditions facing our communities
vary in different parts of the world, today I instruct you once again to double your efforts to protect our fellow countrymen
wherever they are.
“At the same time, we are strengthening links
with the east, particularly with China, Japan, Korea and India. World economic trends suggest that this Asian region will
be the zone with the most dynamic economic growth over the next few decades.
“Congress passed reforms that will strengthen
public finances, boost our competitiveness, permit the creation of jobs and improve the quality of the country's institutional
life. Passage of these reforms showed that Mexico is obviously moving. We will continue to advance until we not only make
our country a better option for productive investment and exports, technological development and tourism, but also a better
country for Mexicans to lead decent lives.
“On the basis of the advantages provided by
the Strategic Partnership Agreements with the European Union, Israel, Latin America and Japan, I would urge you to work even
harder to create export opportunities and enable our businessmen to make far better use of the preferential access quotas
we have negotiated. Last year, in order to make the promotion of investment and trade more efficient, we created PROMÉXICO,
and I would ask you to coordinate your efforts with this organization.”
