Mexican
President Meets with Trilateral Commission
Presidency of the Republic
On
September 30, Mexican President Felipe Calderón met with leading businessmen and academics from Mexico, the United States
and Canada, members of the Trilateral Commission. During the event, the president
put forward his views on the economic integration of the region, as well as Mexico's role and challenges in this respect.
During
the annual meeting of the US chapter of the Trilateral Commission, which took place in Cancun, Quintana Roo, the president
remarked that in recent years the region has lost economic leadership and competitiveness, due largely to the fact that liberalization
has been halted.
In
this respect, he stated that it is essential to overcome the approaches that make it impossible to take advantage of the potential
of the labor force of the entire region by using mechanisms that reflect the complementary nature of the economies involved,
and in which migration will not be the only alternative for the population.
President
Calderón said that Mexico does not want to be a migrant-expelling country, and that the main objective of his government is
to create the conditions to enable Mexicans to find jobs in their own territory.
He
explained that the Mexican government has undertaken a series of measures to make its economy more effective, such as the
approval of structural economic reforms and the battle against organized crime.
The
Trilateral Commission is a non-governmental international organization founded in 1973 to promote greater cooperation between
democratic countries. It includes leading figures from the world of economics
and business in the world's three regions: North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
The
regional meeting, which took place in Cancun, was attended by the businessman and founder of this organization David
Rockefeller; Joseph Nye, Harvard academic; Thomas Foley, President for North America of the Commission; Allan Gotlieb, President
of Sotheby’s of Canada; Lorenzo Zambrano, President of CEMEX; and Paul Volcker, former Governor of the US Federal Reserve.
