Mexican President Seeks to Avoid Confrontation
with Congress
“Política
y políticos” Column
Mexican President Felipe Calderón will hand deliver his first State of the Nation report (Informe) to the Chamber
of Deputies on September 1, however he will give his political address to the nation on September 2 in the National Auditorium. This insofar as no end is in sight, nor whatsoever accord, in the frigid debate over
the September 1 ceremony that is taking place between the political party groups in Congress.
According to the Office of the Presidency, after delivering his Informe to Congress in writing, and thus complying
with the Mexican Constitution, the President will not make any statement.
Following talks at the Chamber of Deputies, the president’s office expects Calderón to be received at the dais
and not in an anteroom, but only to deliver the document and without speaking. He
will remain only for the official opening ceremony of the September 1 ordinary session of Congress.
The mass public event, that will include some 9,000 people, will take place on Sunday, September 2, at the National
Auditorium.
What Calderón wants is respectful treatment of the presidential investiture, and not to deal with pushing and shoving
in order to force his way to the rostrum. In other words, he wants to carryout
the festivity in peace, but too for Mexicans to know the accomplishments of his first year [sic: actually nine months]
in office.
